Full Description

1998: Human remains were revealed during soil removal in a garden. Excavation and examination of the remains revealed one near complete skeleton in a supine extended position on an east-west orientation. The whole skeleton was excavated apart from the lower legs which ran beneath a gas pipe and the right hand which was missing. This skeleton was lifted. The individual is likely a male aged 18-23 years. Dental caries and enamel hypoplasia were present in the dentition as was evidence of dental wear similar to pipe-wear. Further leg bones were revealed to the left side of the head of the first burial but this burial was left in situ. This second burial was a larger individual but sex and age could not be determined. Confident dating was not possible, however based on dental features and aged appearance of the bones the inhumations are not of recent origin. The orientation and body position of the first skeleton is consistent with Christian burial practices and it could be related to the adjacent cemetery of the medieval church of St Botolph (see HVH 005 med).
