Full Description

1996: The earliest phase of activity on the site is late Iron Age represented by several ditches which are likely field boundaries on the periphery of a settlement. An early medieval ditch and a medieval ditch were also revealed which likely represent a trackway and field/plot boundaries. A colluvial layer overlay these features and contained a relatively large number of abraded medieval pottery sherds and residual sherds of prehistoric and Roman pottery. A number of metal objects were also present in this layer including the tip of a Bronze Age sword or dagger which appeared to have been deliberately broken and may have originated from the adjacent bronze age bowl barrow. A series of 12 shallow possible post holes or pads and a pit were cut into the surface of the colluvial layer and produced a small quantity of medieval finds. They were like remnants of a temporary agricultural structure. A modern field boundary represented the latest phase of activity which ran northeast-southwest across the site and is visible on the 1841 Tithe map and still visible on the 1965 OS map. (S1)
