Full Description
Post Medieval maltings located on the waterfront at Ipswich. It is located on reclaimed land. The earliest images revealed the site started development around 1842 thought two sets of columns on the waters edge originally supported two storehouses, with two upper storeys of brick. These cast Iron columns may be original. By 1867 these builds outs would have provided more storage space. The eastern building also had central doors opening over the quay. Over the next decades to he dockside gradually came under the control of two firms, Cranfield's and Paul's with the original narrow plots being consolidated into larger sites, with the last plot to be absorbed was the Union Jack Inn between 1952 and 1961. At the centre is a large red brick warehouse with two rear ranges, built around 1879. The dock front building has not change, however the rear originally had pyramidal roofs to ventilate the drying kilns. These were altered circa 1960 when the modern façade was inserted fronting Key street, and in the 1970s when the western range was gutted buy fire. The former kilns at the northern ends have been altered and rebuild. Machinery on the site consisted of grains elevators and transfer equipment in the silos, weighbridge in the northern forecourt, and the steeping vats and neighbouring drying room equipment in the malthouse wings, of modern original (S1).
