Full Description
2022:The building recording has confirmed that the Clubhouse of the Golf Course was constructed in the early 19th Century. It was in use initially as a farmhouse for the first three phases, when it was leased to the golf club in 1884 when it was updated to be used as a clubhouse. It contains phases of construction and alterations throughout the 19th Century and into the early 21st Century, representing its changing use over that time span. As far as the building’s historic interest is concerned, this is assessed as being of only ‘low’ heritage significance, represented by the limited historic and architectural interest of a mid 19th Century farmhouse converted into a golf course clubhouse in the late 19th Century and modernised thereafter. Its historic interest derives from its close association with the development of Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club - one of the oldest Clubs in England – because in and of itself, the post-1840 date of construction means that this is one of a great many farmhouses that have survived from this period through to the present day, and so careful selection and scrutiny is needed to identify those which are genuinely significant. The pro-shop was built in the mid19th Century, it neither retains nor displays any features of architectural or historic interest which mark it out as anything other than a modestly proportioned cottage of typical form, character and materials palette for its period. There is nothing inherently unusual or characteristic about this building and its mid-19th Century date of construction means that it derives from a timespan where there are many better preserved examples of domestic architecture. The pro-shop is assessed as possessing ‘negligible’ heritage significance, based around the fact that the building dates from the second half of the 19th Century and insofar as the pro-shop building possesses any heritage significance, it derives solely from its association with Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country (S1).
