Full Description
The two storey red brick Almshouses were constructed between 1887 and c.1910, some of the 20 houses being occupied in 1908 whilst others were still incomplete. They were constructed in linear plan form aligned on an E/W axis with a projecting central gable with ground floor conservatory, a room above (this was created in the loft a few years later and is now in use as an office). There are ten houses on each side of the central bay which has an upper gable with a clock face on the N and S elevations and a pyramidal roofed bellcote above ridge height. The bellcote is of painted timber, open sided with a leaded pyramidal roof, ornamental eaves boards and fretwork spandrels. The roof is of red clay pantiles and the S elevation has a burnt brick string course above which is pebble dash render with mock half timbering (concrete) to the first floor. There is a brick plinth. The 12 red brick axial stacks are rectangular with two drip bands and oversailing tops. The stacks serving Nos. 1 and 20 (at either end) have 4 clay chimney pots and the other 10, which serve pairs of houses, have 8 clay pots (S1).
