Full Description

1934: Excavation. Shafts - ? Rom. Three shafts cutting clay, sand and chalk found in brickearth quarry. Two partially excavated to depths of 29 feet and 66 feet. No well dated finds - two fragments silver sheet; polished marble; brick/ tile fragments; one pottery sherd ? 'Early Roman'. Suggested as Roman 'ritual shafts' (S1).
