Monument record KCC 112 - Isolated Late Saxon and Medieval activity, Town Farm, Town Farm Lane,

The principal results of the evaluation were the identification of the 19th century field pattern, observed on the 1839 parish tithe map, and the later land division that configured the parcels during the latter half of the 20th century. The evaluation also identified some isolated Late Saxon and Medieval activity within the southwestern area of the site, comprising Pit 44 in Trench 14 which contained Late Saxon pottery, frequent charcoal and burnt flint, as well as two pit-like features, with similar infilling, but a poorer level of preservation due to ploughing. Two ditches were dated with Medieval pottery, recovered from within Ditch 22 in Trench 68 and within Ditch 60 in Trench 106. The northeast to southwest aligned linear anomalies observed during the geophysical survey (Headland 2023) were exposed and investigated during the evaluation. Although no datable finds have been retrieved from any of the slots, these are possibly related to the Medieval activity identified in the northern area of the site (S1).
