Full Description

No.81 Guildhall Street is designated as a Grade I listed building. The building is of significant architectural and historical interest due to its connection with Sir John Soane. It is suggested that No.81 Guildhall Street is Sir John Soane’s best-preserved work in Suffolk. Although much altered the core of the house appears to date back to the C16/C17. The central part of the house was originally timber framed but mostly rebuilt (re-fronted) in redbrick between 1730 and 1745 by Orbell Ray (senior). The house has two rear projecting wings which partly dates to the C16/C17. Very little of the pre-C18 timber framed house, prior to Orbell Ray’s works, appears to have survived or rather is exposed to view (S1).
