Full Description

Grade II listed timber-framed house and shop. The listing describes the building as being of 17th century date but there is unclear in what basis this was concluded and appears to be unlikely and a 19th century date is more likely . From the front, the building can be seen to be two-storey in red brick in Flemish Bond. The shopfront in timber is mid 19th century in design with central double doors and shop windows divided into six lights. On the first floor there are three widely spaced 19th century sash windows to a three-over-six light pattern set in shallow reveals and almost all the panes have good early 19th century glass. The front roof slope is covered in natural slate and runs continuously over No.87 and the adjacent restaurant to the east. There is one short Victorian chimneystack to the front range at the west end of about 12 brick courses overall and probably with three flues but with a single gault clay pot. The roof comprised two parallel gabled ranges with a central valley. The front elevation appears not to have been significantly altered from the 19th century. The rear main elevation appears to be of later date than the front-range (as also evidenced internally and has been significantly altered by re-fenestration in the late 20th century an has a modern roof covering. To the rear of the main façade there are two rear extensions in red brickwork some of which is in poor condition and has been extensively patch repaired in cement. The extension closest to the house is the longer and has mono-pitch roof in single roll clay pantiles falling to the east and a 19th century single flue red brick chimneystack of 22 courses. Attached to the south is a shorter extension with a monopitch roof also in pantiles falling to the west. Both extensions have modern timber casement windows serving a kitchen and bathroom. To rear of the site on the western boundary and slightly down the hill and separated by a short distance from No.87 is a two storey red brick outbuilding with a clay pantile roof. The building is probably early 19th century in date and it is understood it may once have been used as a (fish) smokehouse (S1)
