Full Description
The last surviving medieval church of Dunwich, All Saints, was abandoned after 1754 before falling into the sea completely in 1922. In 1826 it was decided to build a new church using the sale of the bells and lead from All Saints to fund construction. The site of St James' Hospital (DUN 005) was chosen. Human skeletons were revealed during excavations for the foundations, presumably burials associated with the hospital.TheChurch was completed by 1832 and consecrated bu the Bishop of Norwich. A new chancel was added in 1881. Designed to emulate medieval style. The remains of the leper hospital are presetn to the south east of the church.(S1)
