Monument record HUD 079 - Cropmark and earthwork of possible Bronze Age round barrow or medieval to post medieval windmill mound

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmark of a ring ditch and the low earthwork of a mound, visible on aerial photographs and visualised lidar data, may mark the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, or alternatively a medieval to post medieval windmill mound. As the mound is visible on visualisations from a lidar survey flown relatively recently (2022), it is likely that the earthwork still survives.

Full Description

September 2026. South-West Suffolk Claylands Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
The cropmark of a ring ditch and the low earthwork of a mound, visible on aerial photographs (S1) and visualised lidar data (S2-S3), may mark the site of a Bronze Age round barrow, or alternatively a medieval to post medieval windmill mound. There is a slight discrepancy between the location of the ring ditch and that of the mound, which may relate to problems rectifying the aerial imagery and/or the mound having been spread by ploughing. As the mound is visible on visualisations from a lidar survey flown relatively recently (2023), it is likely that the earthwork still survives.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk County Council Environment Team), 18th September 2026.
