Monument record HUD 080 - Fragmentary cropmarks of possible prehistoric enclosure

Please read our .

Summary

Part of a possible curvilinear enclosure, probably of prehistoric date, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Although only part of its ditch circuit is visible, the enclosure appears similar to others recorded to the south and east (CLA 174, CAV 097, PSG 052). At the same time, the cropmarks are both fragmentary and faint, and are only visible on one set of aerial photographs; their archaeological origin is not certain.

Full Description

September 2026. South-West Suffolk Claylands Aerial Investigation and Mapping (AI&M) Project.
Part of a possible curvilinear enclosure, probably of prehistoric date, is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs (S1). Although only part of its ditch circuit is visible, the enclosure appears similar to others recorded to the south and east (CLA 174, CAV 097, PSG 052). An alternative interpretation is that the enclosure is associated with the medieval to early post medieval deer park, Estry Park (HUD 015), as it is located within its former extent as recorded by the HER. At the same time, the cropmarks are both fragmentary and faint, and were only seen on one set of aerial photographs. As a consequence their archaeological origin is not certain, and they could instead reflect natural variations in geology and/or soils.
S. Tremlett (Norfolk County Council Environment Team), 21st September 2026.
