Full Description
Church, St Mary's.
2019: Archaeological Monitoring during groundworks for a small kitchen extension and a toilet on the north side of the church revealed a deposit of made ground containing post Medieval and modern rubble, thought to be deposited during later works on the church, throughout the development area. The north wall foundations were also observed and recorded. No articulated or diarticulated human remains were encountered despite the monitored areas being located within the graveyard. (S1)
2018: Two test pits were excavated within the area of a proposed extension to the north side of St. Mary’s Church, Flowton, Suffolk. These test pits revealed a substantial amount of post-medieval peg tile, flint nodules and chalk fragments, perhaps the remains of demolition and refurbishment activity on the church. No graves were uncovered during the archaeological works and no disarticulated bone was recovered. A piece of graffiti, consisting of the date ‘1778’, was recorded on a buttress, which is to be enclosed by the proposed development (S2).
