Full Description

Moat, Now flattened, showing as a cropmark on arable land (S1)(S3). Probably the `moat and land within being sometime the cyte of the manor of Woodhall' mentioned in the will of John Wyncoll of Little Waldingfield 1580 (R2). Manor of Woodhall alias Waldingfield Parva Manor (R1). In Park Wood at time of Tithe Survey, 1841. Irregular, approximately 80m x 80m on AP (S2)(S3).
In the 16th century the property was owned by the Wyncoll family. In his will of 1544 John Wyncoll mentions his farm at Woodhall. It has been supposed that the site of the farm was the site of the manor, however the John Wyncoll who died in 1544 was not the lord of the Manor. His son also John Wyncoll in his will of 1580 bequeathed to his nephew Roger Wyncoll his moat and land ‘being sometime the cyte of the Manor of Woodhall as it was supposed and which was some Mr Luttrell’s’. The second John Wyncoll did not obtain the lordship of the manor until 1573. So the reference to the farm at Woodhall in his father's will must be the present building Woodhall Farm/Waldingfield Hall and the site of the manor must be elsewhere. I have attached a digital image of an area of wood shown on the tithe map (1841)(S4) and named Park Wood (113). The same wood is shown on a deed plan of 1854 (S5) but with what appears to be a remnant of a moat in the southwest corner. By 1866 the wood had been cleared and the area is an open field after that date ( S6).
Med pottery scatter found here during 2004. See WFL 003.
