Full Description

Circa 25 pieces pottery, possibly huts. Claimed to be Saxon - may actually be Roman?
29 Sept 1951: test trench dug by 'an amateur archaeologist'. Mainly Roman finds but said to be 'fragments of Anglo-Saxon coarse decorated pottery' as well. Reported by CR Elliott (S3).
September/October 1951: Planned investigation undertaken by member of Suffolk Institute of Archaeology. Various finds listed including `approx 25 sherds of Anglo-Saxon coarseware' (S2).
May 1952: further excavtion by same amateur archaeologist. Further Roman pottery at same levels as before and, 'at a deprth of about 38-in. a circular patch of charcoal approx. 36-in. in diameter was uncovered. This, an experienced archaeologist believes, marked the hearth of an Anglo-Saxon hut. Pieces of coarse pottery and animal bones of that period helped to substantiate his theory … A few fragments of Roman red ware (not Samian) were found a few inches below the level of the hearth, while lower still were a few pieces of coarse, gritty pottery unlike any of the Anglo-Saxon examples noted in the first stratum.' (S4, which includes an aerial photograph of the site).
Basil Brown's newspaper cutting, EADT 28/5/1952, states: It is thought that a circular patch of charcoal which has been revealed at Rodbridge marks the hearth of an Anglo-Saxon hut. A particularly large fragment of pottery on account of its thickness, is believed to be part of a cooking pot (S1). A photograph of the excavation taken by Basil Brown, possibly shows part of this hearth (S1).
