Full Description

Little Thurlow Hall - site of. In grounds of present Little Thurlow Hall. Originally situated a short distance East of present Little Thurlow Hall (& C19 building). Original Hall erected by Sir S Soame during reign of Elizabeth I and destroyed by fire in 1809 (S1, S2).

Tithe Map of 1846 shows a series of 5 fish ponds in a line at the North end of the site, the ponds diminishing in size from East to West. Map also shows the long pond, named `Garden Canal' on the South side of the site. The shorter pond parallel to the long one is not shown, no house is shown either. Ownership continued in the same family from the C16 to C19, (S1-S6).

Within (South East corner) of former (deer?) park (TUL 018) carefully mapped in 1735 (S4).
Presumably an earlier hall site existed (nearby or moated site TUL 002?).
