Full Description
Bronze-gilt figurine, 9.5cm high found in field N of Poystreet Green. St John the Evangelist in attitude of grief, head resting in his right hand. Solid, cast, fully modelled in 3D. Probably made in Liege region. Late C12. Part of a crucifixion scene, ? altar decoration. No associations. Sold for 35,000 guineas, present whereabouts unknown (R1).
1999(?): Purchased jointly by Ipswich & Moyses Hall Museums.
Thetford ware sherd found in same field (IPSMG note).
