Full Description
In February 1951 in laying the water pipeline through Ixworth, pieces of oak timbers were found 4 feet below present river bed and just beyond Trayton House, Ixworth (IXW 017) across the river alongside the present road bridge, and on to Bridge Farm, Pakenham. The timbers, including sections of planking, are undated but were thought to be Roman at the time of discovery. Samian and coarse Roman sherds were retrieved in the vicinity of the timber, including 2 samian bases, one stamped MARCI M. Various bronze and iron objects are described in Basil Brown's report but these are undateable (S1)(S2). See also Rom.
