Full Description
In Church Hill pipeline trench alongside St Mary's Church wall, two ditches were revealed: (1) was near the church gate at TL 9291 6709 and (2) close to the end of the wall to the south, TL 9291 6704. The ditches were 15-20 feet wide, 4 feet deep, and had been cut in solid chalk. The bottom of the ditches was 4 feet wide and contained black earth with evidence of fire. An iron object was found (Basil Brown thought it was a bill hook) which was sent to Ipswich Museum (S1)(S2).
Note: Large earthwork flat bottomed pond/ditch/hollow way like feature to east of church in existing churchyard (S3).
