Summary

In Church Hill pipeline trench alongside St Mary's Church wall, two ditches were revealed: (1) was near the church gate at TL 9291 6709 and (2) close to the end of the wall to the south, TL 9291 6704.

Full Description

In Church Hill pipeline trench alongside St Mary's Church wall, two ditches were revealed: (1) was near the church gate at TL 9291 6709 and (2) close to the end of the wall to the south, TL 9291 6704. The ditches were 15-20 feet wide, 4 feet deep, and had been cut in solid chalk. The bottom of the ditches was 4 feet wide and contained black earth with evidence of fire. An iron object was found (Basil Brown thought it was a bill hook) which was sent to Ipswich Museum (S1)(S2).
Note: Large earthwork flat bottomed pond/ditch/hollow way like feature to east of church in existing churchyard (S3).
