Full Description

Multi-period site, Mesolithic to Medieval.
Five pottery kilns, kiln waste pits, ditches, potters hut. Distinctive "West Stow" ware with stamped ornament; copies of Samian forms; flagons, etc. Date range AD 80 - 150 (S1).
Some excavations by Basil Brown 1941 and 1947 (S2).
An amount of Rom and late Rom material including coins, pottery, finger rings, bracelets, brooches, spoons, pins, toilet implements, a stylus, a bronze balance beam and a miniature axe occurred in Sax contexts despite no evidence of late Rom presence on the site. They would appear to be associated with the Sax occupation (S3).
Other Rom finds of the late C1 and C2 are to be discussed in a forthcoming volume of the West Stow report (S3).
1985: Roman dupondius of Late 1st to 2nd century found at West Stow Anglo Saxon Village site. Dated no later than circa 138 AD. (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)
