Full Description
A quadrangular moat marks the site of the Abbey Farm (S1).
No one lingered to look for traces of "the vanished Culpho Abbey" which exists only in the imagination of the Suffolk topographer Dutt. The fact that the church once belonged to the Abbey of Leiston, whence perhaps the name of a local farmstead, the Abbey Farm, appears to have given rise to this fairy story (S2).
Enclosing Abbey Farmhouse is an oval-shaped homestead moat which is water filled and in good condition. It measures overall 110m N - S x 80m transversely. There is a causewayed entrance midway along the E arm. The present farm house, much restored, is probably C17-C18.
Published survey (1:25 inch 1927) correct (1962) (S3).
Moat, occupied, isolated, sub- rectangular (S4).
April 1998: Scheduled - details in (S5).
