Full Description

Complex, large field system, with parts of trackways and including ring ditch SLY 021, and a rectangular enclosure SLY 042. Field boundaries are chiefly rectangular, some on a N-S alignment. A trackway can be traced on a roughly NW-SE alignment, bifurcating at the SE end. Another track may run approximately N-S, intersecting with ring ditch SLY 021 (S1) (S2). On parish boundary with Arwarton - see Arwarton 020 and 021.
Elements of two complex and extensive field systems are visible as cropmark palimpsest on the Arwarton/Shotley border. The majority of the features described above are elements of one of two cropmark landscapes which extend for an area of approximately 120ha across Shotley peninsular, centred on circa 23833463. The fist is a probable late prehistoric or Roman in date, and is recorded in ARW 020, and the second is probably Medieval or Post-Medieval in date and is described in SLY 044. The cropmark elements described above are visible in S3 and S4, but see SLY 044 or ARW 020 for more information on the wider landscape. Ring ditch SLY 021 is one of 6 ring ditches in this wider area.
