Full Description

Ring ditch, circa 25m diameter, occurring in NE corner of field system SLY 020, and intersecting on E side with remains of trackway (S1) (S2).
A possible round barrow is visible as a ring ditch cropmark, centred on (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s). The ring ditch is circa 20m in diameter and is roughly 6m east of a rectangular enclosure recorded in SLY 044. The trackway described above and visible in S1, is probably the location of a field boundary visible on the 1st and 2nd edition Ordnance Survey maps of 1884 and 1904, and not an archaeological feature. The size of the ring ditch is larger than that usually expected for an iron age round-house, suggesting that the ditch probably surrounded a barrow of bronze age date. There are other similarly sized features in the immediate area which do not appear to be associated with the late prehistoric or Roman field system recorded in ARW 020, possibly supporting this interpretation (see SLY 022). However, the possibility that a large round-house stood in this location can only be disproved by excavation. In addition, only one print from the sources below was available (S1, NMR (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)), and the feature was not visible on any other prints, so the possibility that the ring ditch is not archaeological feature must also be considered.
