Full Description

Broom Hills is a multi period site excavated by B Brown over a 4 year period, 1964-1968. Few sherds of Rom pottery, parts of two mortaria and part of an amphora are in archive store but compared with Sax artefacts, which are numerous, their scarcity led Brown to believe that this was not evidence of a Rom settlement. Gritty red brick tiles which he assumed to be Rom were found with the Sax remains but those present in the archive store appear to be PMed. Basil Brown finally interpreted this site to be that of a Sax manor house imposed upon a Neo causewayed camp with no reference to Rom settlement (S1).
Occasional metal detected finds from a wide area of this field include a brooch fragment (S2).
Also Mes, Neo, Sax, Un.
