Full Description

Extensive field systems, with rectilinear field boundaries and long W-E/SE trackway suggested through the midst of the fields. Other short lengths of track also apparent. With ring ditches, FRT 014, FRT 015, amongst the field boundaries. Just E & NE of the interrupted ditch system, FRT 005 (S1-S11)). Also Preh.
The remnants of a possible Later Prehistoric or Roman field system are visible as cropmarks of ditches on aerial photographs, centred on TM 17343841 in Freston parish. A substantial trackway is visible running through the field system for nearly a kilometre on a north-west south-east alignment from TM 16753862 to TM 17613825. The trackway does not appear to be related to the Post Medieval or modern landscape and may be of Later Prehistoric or Roman date. Another section of trackway is visible on a similar alignment to the east (WLV 040) but this does appear to be directly related to Post Medieval field boundaries. Another possible trackway is visible running on a roughly north-south alignment from TM 17493833 to TM 17413785. This trackway is also interpreted as Later Prehistoric or Roman although some of the sections of trackway do follow the route of a Post Medieval footpath. The rest of the area is covered in linear boundaries and the cropmarks of partial enclosures many of which, like those focused on TM 17373819, do not relate to the Post Medieval and modern field patterns and have been interpreted as possibly Later Prehistoric or Roman in date. Others, such as those focused on TM 17203845, are on an alignment more similar to the modern field pattern and are much more difficult to interpret. Periglacial frost cracks also run across the area. (S1-S13) See FRT 014 and FRT 015 for the ring ditches located within the field system and see FRT009 for the Post Medieval field system. (S14)
