Full Description

Long narrow rectangular building, circa 50m x 10m, post-hole construction. Occurs within interrupted ditch system enclosure, FRT 005, close to the edge in the NE part (S1-S3).
For flint scatter and details of causewayed enclosure, see FRT 005 (S4).
A possible Neolithic long house or Anglo-Saxon hall is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, located inside the Neolithic causewayed enclosure at Potash Farm, Freston at TM 16913803. The building is rectangular, enclosing an area 37 metres by 9.5 metres, and is defined by a series of pits along its longer sides and by a narrow ditch on its shorter sides. Possible internal divisions are defined by both ditches and pits. An aerial photographic transcription of the site was undertaken by Carolyn Dyer of the Air Photography Unit of the former RCHME in 1995 as part of the 'Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic project' (S5) and was subsequently published in Oswald, Dyer and Barber's 'The Creation of Monuments' (S6). The transcription was used in the Suffolk Coastal NMP project. See FRT 005 for the causewayed enclosure. (S7)
August 2007: geophysical survey of area of building - details in (S8).
