Full Description

Two Rom pottery kilns with wrappings, kiln debris and pottery on steep slope in Mill Field, N of Summer Lane. Ploughed out in January 1958 but ploughmen and owner state that black patches had shown at this sie for many years previously. Basil Brown visited field and collected pottery, mainly C2 and C3, which had been put aside by workmen, and collected kiln wrapping and debris from at least 2 kilns approximately 10 feet apart. Due to the steepness of the slope and constant cultivation the kilns were already almost destroyed. Also on the field a coin, small and worn, of the Constantine period had been found by B Brown (no date given), but this had been broken whilst cleaning. Brown and Norman Smedley revisited the site and discussed possibility of saving kiln remains with the owner, but no excavation is recorded (S1).
