Full Description

LBA gold `lock-rings' or `hair-rings' of triangular section. Pair of hollow gold penannular ornaments decorated in chevron style on face plates. "Found in S of Suffolk many years ago, the finder being dead no exact location is identifiable" (S1). No side plates (missing?), 27 mm diameter. "Found `many years ago' between Haverhill and Saffron Walden (Essex) but the precise find- place has not been recorded. Neither is there any information available about the circumstances of discovery but both ornaments may have been found together" (S2).
Although (S1) specifies S Suffolk, (S2) suggests an Essex findspot as more likely.
According to Alan Armer, his mother stated that these were amongst ?hoard found in ?Saffron Walden area, on field/s with 3 barrows deliberately ploughed by farmer, following compulsory purchase for glider field during 2nd World War (?late). Items given to four people (land army girls), each of whom had 3-4 objects each. One of these was Alan Armer's mother, who was given (or ?found) two gold armlets with traces of red enamel with red clay with red textile impressions and the two lock-rings. One of the armlets sold for 270 pounds during the war to a dealer (an American, uniformed serviceman), who tried to trace the other women; the other in 1953 for 400- 500 pounds. The armlets were said to have fitted over Alan's Mother's upper arm when not tensed. Further material included a gold waist torc and shale and gold bracelets. The red clay with textile impressions was thought to have been associated with a number of the items. The lock-rings were given to Alan by his mother and were later sold by his father to BSEMH (S3).
