Full Description

Excavations in Bridge Street by ESCC revealed 20 feet length of wall, 2 feet wide x 4 feet high, in September 1950. The wall was built of stones and mortar and peaty substances near were thought to indicate a former river bed and thus the wall was thought to be the boundary wall of a river. Newspaper report in Basil Brown archive (The Star 4.10.1950), is headlined "Roman wall found", but Basil thought it could have been Med (S1). Similarly recorded as `Roman wall' by Daily Express (S2)(R1).
