Full Description

Lakenheath decoy. Shown as ovalish open mere but marked as Lakenheath decoy on Hodskinson's map of 1783 (S1). Marked as `Old Decoy' with square surrounding ditch and ordered central pool with 8 radiating arms on OS 1892 and 1903 maps (S2).
Now shows from air as square enclosure with circa 270m sides and rounded corners. Central pool area indistinct probably due to construction of road across this point of the decoy (S3)(R1).
Built circa 1736 by one of Styward's of Lakenheath, hired by Lord Orford in about 1800 (S4).
AP shows ovalish shape to outer(?) ditch (S6).
