Full Description

Area examined on route of Ixworth by-pass, N of main site (see PKM 005). Trenches revealed a substantial layer of modern rubble dumping, below which most of the area is also covered in hillwashed brown soil. Rom pottery found in basal part of hillwash, features (a small linear feature and stake holes) were only found on S edge of area (S1). A section was also opened in the N of the area for environmental sampling of deposits on edge of Mickel Mere (S5) - a monolith sample taken examined for plant macrofossils etc., also C14 dating. This showed a reduction in soil disturbance, i.e. probably less intense farming in the immediate post-Roman period, followed by renewed activity in C7 (S2). Similar evidence of two phases of agricultural activity in pollen (S3).
See SCCAS Report 99/11 - Roman pottery, ditches and coins (S4) found in monitoring of area.
