Full Description

September 2013. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of a type 22 World War Two pillbox and associated military structures, which originally part of wider defensive network, consisting of an extensive line of anti-tank cubes, barbed wire obstructions and associated defences (see LWT 045) is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The site is centred on TM 5315 9525. The wider system forms a perimeter defence or ‘stop line’ around Lowestoft. See LWT 194-6, LWT 198-200 for other nearby components of this defensive system. The aerial photographs from 1941 (S1) and 1944 (S2) indicate that further additional temporary structures were present however not all of these could be discerned confidently and were therefore not mapped individually. An earthen-covered structure or mound adjacent to the pillbox may have been an air raid shelter.
The pillbox still survives within the grounds of The Benjamin Britten High School. It is feasible that other elements of the site also survive.
