Full Description
September 2013. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The site of a former World War Two pillbox, which was originally part of wider defensive network, consisting of an extensive line of anti-tank cubes, barbed wire obstructions and associated defences (see LWT 045) is visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3). The site is centred on TM 5295 9508. The wider system forms a perimeter defence or ‘stop line’ around Lowestoft. See LWT 194-LWT 200 for other nearby components of this defensive system. The pillbox is hexagonal, but larger than the nearby type 22 pillboxes (for example LWT 197). A possible blast wall covering the entrance may be visible in 1945 (S3), however this cannot confidently be discerned on the earlier aerial photographs and may relate to damage to the structure as indicated by the hole in the pillbox roof.
