Monument record BLN 048 - Undated enclosures

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of a group of rectilinear enclosures and/or fields of unknown, but possibly medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs. Although none of these boundaries are depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map, or in one case appear to underlie them, the general orientation of them is the same as the surrounding medieval to post medieval boundaries, although it may just reflect the continuing influence of earlier features in landscape development.

Full Description

January 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks of a group of rectilinear enclosures and/or fields of unknown, but possibly medieval to post medieval date, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2). The site is centred on TM 5236 9854. Although none of these boundaries are depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (S3), or in one case appear to underlie them, the general orientation of them is the same as the surrounding medieval to post medieval boundaries, although it may just reflect the continuing influence of earlier features in landscape development. On morphological grounds these enclosures and fields could be interpreted as being Roman in date, and do not look dissimilar to components of BLN 047 to the south. Roman finds have also been found in close proximity (BLN Misc - MSF12042).

March 2023. Assessment of the Character and Significance of East Anglian Field Systems project.
The site described above was included in the dataset analysed for the Historic England-funded Assessment of East Anglian Field Systems project. See the project report (S3) for further details.
