Full Description
Rectangular enclosure, circa 40m x 30m with trackway, on different alignment, to NW, possibly linked by cropmark (S1). Trackway may join cropmark complex, BLN 007.
January 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks and soilmarks of possible square earthen enclosure or stone-built structure of uncertain date or archaeological significance, are visible on aerial photographs (S3-S5). The site is centred on TM 5070 9598. Possible interpretations include a Roman temple or watchtower and/or signal station, or possibly a later medieval or post medieval enclosure or industrial site. Although no such site is depicted on depicted on the 1652 Estate Map of Somerleyton (S6). Further investigation of this site and any associated surface material is required for the interpretation to be refined.
The site consists of a 40m across enclosure that exhibits evidence of both bank and ditch construction or feasibly some stone-built components. Internal subdivisions, a possible small circular structure or ditched feature and an angular banked or stone structure and/or platform are apparent. Possible associated boundaries and fields are also visible around the enclosure. The enclosure itself and the boundary ditches are not aligned the same as the surrounding fields, but do reflect that of parts of the cropmarks to the north (BLN 007), thought to be of Roman or later date.
