Full Description
Ring ditch, circa 15m diameter, within field system SOL 010. Appears to be crossed by one field boundary (S1-S3).
January 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks of group of ring ditches of uncertain date and interpretation are are visible on aerial photographs (S4-S9). The site is centred on TM 5049 9804. This record now includes SOL 009 and other small ring ditches within the immediate vicinity. Some of the ring ditches appear to be overlain by parts of field system (SOL 010), which has broadly been interpreted as being of later prehistoric and/or Roman date, although this may represent several phases and have been in use over a long period of time. It is therefore not clear whether this large group of ring ditches represent the remains of earlier round barrows forming a cemetery group or the eaves drip gullies of domestic or agricultural structures associated with use of the field system.
