Full Description

May 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
Earthworks of two sections of World War Two anti-tank ditch either side of Benacre Wood, are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S2), continuing north from WRE 035.
It has also been recorded further south as SCV 032 and REY 034. It is notable that the tank ditch was not visible in June 1941 (S5), and was therefore clearly constructed after this date.
E. Ford (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 14th May 2014.

June 2014. Lothingland, Lowestoft and North Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Mapping Programme.
Earthworks of a further section of the World War Two anti tank ditch are visible on aerial photographs (S2-S4), to the north of Benacre Road, continuing to the north-east through Henstead with Hulver Street as far as Hundred River. At least one pillbox (SHER BNC 095) and a gun emplacement and/or possible weapons pit (SHER HSS 019) have been recorded to the south of the tank ditch, presumably situated to aid in its defence, as well as two further possible pillboxes to the east (SHER HSS 020) sited to defend the Latymer Bridge, at a break in the tank ditch at Hundred River. The tank ditch has been recorded further to the north-east, in Kessingland, as KSS 038, and was clearly constructed after June 1941, as it is not visible on the 1941 photographs (S5). The overall record for the anti tank ditch is SHER REY 099.
E. Ford (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 5th June 2014.
