Full Description

Two groups of bomb craters are visible close to the beach at Gunton Denes on 1944 aerial photographs (S1). Only the more southerly ones show on photos from March 1944 (S2), while photos from September 1944 (S1) show both sets of craters. These would appear to have been caused either by a small area of minefield or by a plane ditching excess bombs. On the earlier 1944 photo, the craters are quite neat and regular, which suggests that they are more likely to be part of a minefield. The explosions which caused these craters have obliterated a crenellated trench which could be seen in this location on earlier aerial photographs - see record LWT 069 (XS19031).
