Monument record LWT 086 - World War II coastal defence features.

Sections of brabed wire obstruction can be seen running along the coast south-east of Corton, for approx 500m on 1941 aerial photographs (S1). In addition to this, a length of coastal defence scaffolding can also be seen running parallel to the barbed wire for approx 200m. These features are located on scrubland just to the west of the beach. There may also be another section of defensive scaffolding on the beach close to the tide line, but it is possible that this is part of the sea defences rather than a military feature. These features would have been a component in the coastal defences in this area during World War II, offering protection from an enemy invasion by sea. These defensive features can still be seen quite clearly on aerial photographs from 1944 (S2). Photographs from 1940 (S3) show that at this date, the features had not yet been constructed.
