Full Description

An irregular line of barbed wire obstruction can be seen to surround most of St Bartholemew's Church, Corton (see record COR 019), in aerial photographs from August 1941 (S1). Photographs from earlier that year show that there are no features of World War II date in the immediate vicinity of the church. The barbed wire is between 50 & 100m away from the church. Also visible in these photographs are two trenches, c60m & c70m long, to the east and west of the church. It would appear that the church may have been used as some kind of military strongpoint in the defence of this area during World War II. The features can still be seen quite clearly in aerial photographs from 1944 (S2). The trenches are visible in 1945 photographs (S3), and, although the barbed wire appears to have been dismantled by this date, the course of it can still be traced.
