Monument record COR 041 - World War II bombing decoy site.

Three irregular rectilinier trenches, all adjacent to field boundaries, and surrounded by a length of barbed wire obstruction, are visible on 1941 aerial photographs (S1) to the north-west of Corton. The barbed wire enclosure is linked by a linear stretch of barbed wire to a similar enclosure c 300m to the east (see record COR 002). The features can clearly be seen on 1944 aerial photographs (S2) too. The trenches are likely to have acted as bombing decoys, containing fires lit to draw enemy fire away from inhabited areas. This site may also be related to another decoy site further east on the cliff-egde, just north of Corton (see record COR 040).
