Monument record BAW 082 - WWI Pillbox and Beach scaffolding, now fallen into the sea.

A circular pillbox of World War II (duplicate entry BAW 161 now deleted) date can been in a small patch of woodland on the cliff edge at Bawdsey on aerial photographs. A short stretch of beach scaffolding can be seen below, at the base of cliff, protecting the pillbox from attack from the beach. (S1) Although the pillbox cannot be seen on photographs from 1945 and 1948 due to tree cover, the presence of the scaffolding in 1945 suggests that the pillbox is also of that date. (S2) Although the scaffolding appears to have been removed by 1965, the pillbox is still depicted on the modern base map.
Also seen as part of field survey of the Suffolk Coast - circular pillbox from WW1. An octangonal concrete roof 25-30cm thick has been added (WWII addition?). S3
