Full Description

A number of practice trenches, varying between 30 and 130m in length, are visible on Dunwich Heath, around TM4706802, on 1945 aerial photographs(S1). Some of the trenches are linear, whilst others are irregular curvilinear and sub-rectangular in plan. The variety of shapes of trench suggests that they were being constructed for practice purposes, to familiarise military personnel with different types of trenches. These features are of World War II date.
