Full Description
A sea bank, c1.35km long in total, can be seen as an earthwork on 1945 aerial photographs (S1) on the southern side of Minsmere New Cut. The bank runs between TM46396620 & TM47716612 with a small gap and some adjoining shorter sections. The feature may continue westwards, but the available aerial photographs do not cover that area. The bank is likely to have been part of the post-medieval flood defences in this area. Strong evidence for this date comes from the fact that the banks are depicted as earthworks on the OS county 1st series 25" map of c1884.
February 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
Further areas of these sea banks earthworks are visible on aerial photographs
(S2), however these have not been mapped due to lack of time and project scope.
S. Horlock (Norfolk Historic Environment Service), 18th February 2015.
