Full Description

A World War II military camp, centred on TM 28604443, is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1944 at Waldringfield on the River Deben. The site was constructed sometime between December 1943 and September 1944 and consisted of a number of possible nissen huts and large and small tents centred on TM28604438, possibly surrounded by a stretch of barbed wire obstruction. To the north of this area, at TM 28554451, a group of small circular tents can be seen. In the inter-tidal zone a number of structures that are possibly related to the military camp can be seen, including a small landing pier at TM 28634446 and a structure surrounded by water which resembles a pillbox at TM 28664440. A short stretch of what is possibly barbed wire obstruction can be seen partially submerged between these two structures. The site had been dismantled by September 1945. (S1)
This site may be related to the operation of the dummy vessels (S2) which were displayed in the Deben Estuary from May 1944 as part of the military operation Fortitude South, which aimed to make the enemy forces think that a huge invasion fleet was been assembled. (S3)
