Full Description

Two post medieval curved wattle structures are visible on aerial photographs from the 1940s onwards, centred on TM24753564. The curved structures were identified as being constructed of wattle following field survey (S1). The structures are clearly visible on photographs from 1946 (S2). The most northerly structure protrudes from the saltings at circa TM24733566 and is roughly 20m long. The more southerly structure extends from a point at circa TM24732564, for a distance of about 16m. A sluice is marked in this location on the 1st Edition Ordnance map of 1884 (S3), but is not noted on the 2nd Edition map of circa 1904 (S4). The wattle structures may have acted as revetments for the mouth of the sluice prior to the construction of the existing sea wall. They have been recently identified through field survey as 'defined in the mud as two curved rows of post protruding into the river from under the present bank' (S1), and are therefore thought to predate the sea bank.
Also seen as part of field survey of Suffolk Coast - within area of groynes - post line, curved. Made from closely packed upright timbers, 10-12m in length. S5
