Full Description

A World War II barbed wire obstruction is visible as a structure on aerial photographs from 1944, extending in a zigzag pattern from TM24603445 to TM25133435. In total the obstruction is circa 800m in length, composed of 4 shorter lengths separated by gaps which appear to have acted as gates or entrances. It appears that this obstruction was intended to act as a second line of defence and to augment the longer obstruction described in record 19595. This obstruction is in turn augmented by the emplacement described in record 19602. The barbed wire, and the gaps within it, are part of a larger network of defence in this area, designed to restrict and direct the movements of anyone in the area of Shotley naval base, which covered much of Shotley peninsular at this time. (S1-S2).
