Full Description

A World War II barbed wire obstruction is visible in the saltmarsh as a structure on aerial photographs from 1944 to 1947, centred on TM25323391. The obstruction is circa 236m in length, and runs from TM25353400 in the northeast to TM25253381 in the southwest. It is located to prevent access to the saltmarsh on Shotley Point from the River Orwell. It is part of a wider network of defences in place intended to restrict movement in the area around the naval base that covered much of the Shotley Gate peninsular at this time. (S1-S2).
