Full Description

A World War II pillbox is visible as a structure on aerial photographs from 1944 onwards, centred on TM24993361. The pillbox measures approximately 3.5m by 3.5m, and is visible on photographs upto 1973. The pillbox has been removed by 1987. The pillbox would have functioned as part of the wider defence network that functioned around Shotley naval base during the war. (S1-S3)
