Full Description
A World War II strongpoint is visible as earthworks, centered on TM24333493. The main element of the strong point is a fieldwork circa 51m long, which runs from circa TM24313495 to circa TM24343490 parallel to a hedgeline that runs along the south side of the road to Shotley Point. At the north-western end the earthwork is semicircular in form and circa 11m in diameter. This section almost abuts the nearby field boundary hedge. From this a linear section runs parallel to the hedge and ends in a slight arc, making up the remaining 40m of the earthwork. Within the protective arm of this earthwork sits another earthwork feature. It is not possible to clearly identify the nature of this feature, but its size and location suggest it may be a disguised pillbox. This strongpoint appears to be located to defend one of two breaches in the anti-tank ditch and barbed wire defence that runs across Shotley Peninsular, and may have acted as a check point, in conjunction with a possible disguised pillbox on the north side of the road (see SLY 096) (also see SLY 069 & SLY 070). (S1-S3).
